Lanka Education and Research Network

Lanka Education And Research Network (LEARN) is the National Research and Education Network (NREN) of Sri Lanka, which interconnects Educational and Research institutions across the country and provides network-related services to them. An NREN is a specialised Internet Service Provider dedicated to supporting the needs of research and education communities in a country. It is distinguished by support for a high-speed backbone network, often offering dedicated channels for individual research projects.

LEARN currently interconnects all of the State Universities under the Ministry of Education, several public universities under other ministries, the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Ministry of Higher Education, many private higher educational institutes, and several national research institutions in Sri Lanka.

LEARN is an advanced network supporting IPv6 and multicast. It currently includes optical fibre links up to 2Gbps. At present, our international connectivity bandwidth is 40Gbps, including 5Gbps to academic networks that connect the academic/research Internet through the Asi@Connect network, SingAREN to Internet2, and NKN. Previously we directed connections to SchoolNet, the network connecting secondary schools, and Local Government Network (LGN), which connects government institutions in Sri Lanka.
